Earlier today newspapers across the country claimed that First National Bank had paid young people and students up to R3500 per day to say negative things about the government. 

FNB CEO Michael Jordaan turned to twitter to refute these claims saying that newspapers were confusing two separate issues. 

On one hand FNB had put together a TV Advert promoting its campaign for helping each other working together. It is the advert most people associate with the campaign (The young girl outside Naledi High in Soweto). In this advert, the information was scripted and actors were paid, which would be standard practise for any TV advert. 

What has been the central issue, and the reason of the public apology to the ANC, was separate survey interview clips which were initially published online by the bank. 

The ANC had taken exception to these unscripted criticisms of government which had been linked to the bank’s brand by association. 

According to @rbjacobs, the banks’ voice on twitter, these were unscripted, uncensored and not paid for.
