Republican stalwart Newt Gingrich is confident that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and President-Elect Donald Trump will achieve a considerable amount during their respective tenures, because of what they have in common.
Schumer is a Senator from New York and Trump is based in New York. Gingrich believes there will be robust exchanges between the two during Trump’s stint in the White House, but still thinks they can get a lot done.
“Schumer has known Trump for a very long time. Right now they’re in the name-calling phase,” Gingrich told radio host John Catsimatidis this week.
“But I think that’s because Schumer is having to be nice to his base and they all want to go fight Trump. They sort of told him that if he’s going to be their leader, he’s got to lead in the fighting,” added Gingrich.
“The fact is that both Trump and Schumer are very mature guys. Schumer is a great professional. He understands the game. And I think that he and Trump will ultimately get some deals done but Schumer first has to convince his base and his activists that they can rely on him to fight.”
