In yet another attack on paramedics working in Cape Town, a crew from Melomed24 were ambushed in Athlone on Friday evening.
Last year, over 80 reports of attacks on paramedic crews were reported.
The crew was targeted by a group of men, after they dropped their colleague at home.
Melomed24’s Salaama Joseph says “When they went down the road they saw four guys at a tree. One of them approached the vehicle, pulled the handle and realised the door was locked. The next one banged and shattered the window, he threw a brick. He (the paramedic) immediately drove away.”
The crew is now receiving trauma counselling.
The Western Cape Health Department has previously voiced concern over the effects these attacks have on the quality of services, EWN reports.
In 2016, paramedics protested over the dangers faced when entering high risk areas.
EMTs have threatened to avoid emergencies in high risk areas, if they are not escorted by police vehicles.
