The figures for the festive season fatalities are expected to be released today.
Transport Minister Dipuo Peters will deliver the 215/2016 figures, which are believed to be significantly higher than usual.
Justice Project South Africa (JPSA) says motorists will be shocked by the latest stats, as at the start of December, a 17% increase in accidents had already been recorded.
No safety campaigns were seen at the end of 2016.
JPSA’s Howard Dembovsky says “Those that I’ve seen would give people extended periods of incarceration, if they drive under the influence of alcohol or they speed.” It really doesn’t cut the mustard.”
