On Tuesday, the Western Cape Transport Department released the figures for the road fatalities during the festive season.

The numbers for 2016 were shockingly higher than the previous year, with a 22% increase in pedestrian fatalities.

Sixty pedestrians died in December, in comparison to the 49 who died in 2015.

Since the start of January, 41 more people have died on the Western Cape’s roads.

Provincial MEC for Transport and Public Works Donald Grant said; “We’ll have to work much closer with road authorities because most pedestrian deaths are in urban areas.”
