Lamberts Bay cancels popular crayfish festival

The WWF-SASSI have appealed to the public to #SkipTheKreef this summer and assist in bringing the popular shellfish back from the brink of commercial extinction.

Organizers of the Lamberts Bay Crayfish Festival (also known as the Kreeffees), have taken the bold step of cancelling the annual festivities.

This comes in the wake of the World Wide Fund-Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative’s (WWF-SASSI) announcement on December 20 that the West Coast Rock Lobster (Jasus lalandii) (also known as crayfish or kreef) on the endangered list.

The WWF-SASSI have appealed to the public to #SkipTheKreef this summer and assist in bringing the popular shellfish back from the brink of commercial extinction.

Lamberts Bay will be doing it’s bit for conservation by cancelling the festival, which was set to run from March 17-19.
