A woman was stabbed and robbed while on her way to work in Hillbrow on Wednesday morning.
A witness, who was on the other side of the road at the time of the incident, told The Star that she saw two men grabbing the woman.
“I realised something was wrong when I saw the two men who were behind the woman separate and approach her from each side. There was a scuffle and shouting – they were grabbing her.”
The witness said the men had knives and were cutting the female as she tried to fight back to protect herself. She tried shouting at the men to stop, but they continued.
The two men fled when police arrived and people ran over to help the victim.
“She had a lot of cuts on her arms and hands. It’s very sad that people get attacked just for going to work. It’s unfair and it shouldn’t be happening. We should be able to get to work safely – women cannot continuously be the targets of thugs,” the witness said.
Hillbrow police spokesperson Sergeant Mduduzi Zono said that the suspects approached the woman and and took two cellphones and stabbed her in both hands.
When the men ran away, they dropped one of the cellphones and it was recovered.
Zondo confirmed that a case of assault and armed robbery has been opened.
