Travel Tuesday: The Zulu Kingdom

Majestic mountains, rolling green hills, and white, sandy beaches, KwaZulu-Natal offers a variety of scenery and activities to suit all tastes and fitness levels.

Monday’s over, but it’s still only Tuesday. So, if you’re in need of a pick-me-up, strap on your travelling shoes and take a sho’t left with us to the kingdom of warriors and adventure – the Zulu kingdom.

Majestic mountains, rolling green hills, and white, sandy beaches, KwaZulu-Natal offers a variety of scenery and activities to suit all tastes and fitness levels.

The province’s subtropical climate makes it a popular year-round destination for tourists.

The stretches of white, sandy beaches along the coast call the beach lover to enjoy the sun, splash in the warm Indian Ocean waters and enjoy the waves on a surfboard or for the less adventurous, a bodyboard.

For the adrenalin-junkie, there’s shark cage diving, bungee-bounce, quadbiking and numerous mountain biking trails.

For the nature lover, lace up your hiking boots and get to know the Barrier of Spear, also known as the Drakensberg.

Come face to face with the sheer cliffs that between the Tugela Valley to the Lesotho plateau nearly 3 000 metres above sea level along the Amphitheatre Heritage Trail in Bergville. Or try the Igwala Gwala Forest Trail in St Lucia in search of the purple crested turaco.

Or the Umhlanga Lagoon Hiking Trail in Umhlanga which is not too long nor too difficult.

In the interior, the Midlands Meander offers among others, an arts and crafts hub, museums and fishing opportunities.

The province, with its long and rich history not only offers museums documenting the history of the region, but also documents the places where numerous battles and conflicts occurred.

Home to two World Heritage Sites, visit the iSimangalist Wetland Park in St Lucia and the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, home to Africa’s highest mountain range south of Kilimanjaro.
