Private security contractor Joey Montague has a lot on his plate. His good friend and business partner has committed suicide. Aside from dealing with the loss and shock of Khosi’s death, Joey also has to deal with the ramifications the death has on the business.

The two had opened a branch of offices, Private Johannesburg, affiliated with the US company Private, owned by Jack Morgan. But a gamble on a government contract to protect mines from illegal miners goes south, leaving Private Johannesburg in dire straits.

Joey decides to scale back on commitments until he can figure out where to go and what to do, when he gets a call from an American woman who has just landed in the country and needs his help. Joey’s initial response is to decline, but something about her plea convinces him to change his mind and help her – which quickly becomes a matter of life and death for both of them.

James Patterson’s bookshots are meant to be short, fast-paced, high-impact stories that can be read in one sitting – and Private Gold delivers in spades.

From the moment you are introduced to Khosi Khumalo in the prologue, the drama and intrigue of the world of private security sucks you in. A fast-pace keeps the book glued to your hands, pushing you to turn the page to see what the danger is that’s coming and how Joey plans to get out of it.

Mackenzie brings the drama and atmosphere of a highveld thunderstorm to life, making you feel the drops of rain on your skin and hear the rumble of thunder.

You feel for Joey in his confusion as he tries to sort through the loss of his friend and the impending loss of his business. Isobel, Joey’s American client, is also likeable, stepping up and helping out in tense situations.

The glimpse into human trafficking and illegal mining comes as a shock to the system.

The book has action galore, is well-written and is hard to put down, accomplishing its aim of being read in one sitting.

If you’re looking for something quick to read, but that is well-written and action-packed, then Private Gold is exactly what you need!
