Police in KwaZulu-Natal confirmed on Saturday morning that the boy involved in the assault on a girl at school that was filmed and circulated on social media, is now in their custody.
The youth, 19, is currently in the custody of police in Inanda, the KZN education department and local SAPS confirmed.
The boy was reportedly handed over to police by his father on Friday evening.
He has not yet been named, but police spokesperson Captain Thembeka Mbhele said he is expected to appear in court on Monday.
The accused was a Grade 9 pupil at Siyathuthuka Secondary School in Inanda but at the beginning of 2017 was moved to a neighbouring school in KwaMashu.
“Suspect handed over by his father. He is currently in custody‚” a message sent by KZN education spokesman Muzi Mahlambi on Saturday morning read.
The assault, of which 20 seconds was caught on cell phone video, happened in November 2016.
The victim involved has also since left the school and is now attending a different one in the area.
