Uganda’s top tertiary institution, Makerere University, announced that it may be recalling a number of degrees it issued, going back to 2011.
According to the Daily Monitor, the institution made the decision following an investigation into what it called “staggering mismatches” between results released by colleges and results issued by the Office of the Academic Registrar.
The newspaper quoted police as saying that “drop-outs” from the university have been using printing houses to forge transcripts which they present as official university documents.
The paper also reported that “a former minister… and a number of members of parliament… will likely be affected”.
Alumni from the prestigious university include cultural and political giants like Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Julius Nyerere and Milton Obote.
