Councillor among protesters arrested outside Gupta-owned mine

A councillor is one of 11 people arrested on Wednesday for protesting at the Gupta-owned Shiva Uranium Mine in the North West.

Police in the North West confirmed that 11 people were arrested on Wednesday after protesting outside the Gupta-owned Shiva Mine.

Lieutenant-Colonel Pelonomi Makau said that a councillor was among the 11 people arrested.

Police say that those arrested are reportedly workers at the Shiva Uranium Mine, near Klerksdorp.

They reportedly embarked on protest action, saying that they were retrenched but had not been paid their severance packages and that they had been retrenched without being given any documentation.

The protesters said that they were also protesting their salaries, saying they were only paid R1 900 and that it was too low.

The protesters were supported by the community of Tigana. They attempted to march to Hartbeesfontein where they were allegedly intent on damaging property. Police say they were able to stop them in time. A police vehicle was however, damaged in the process.

The 11 now face charges of public violence and malicious damage to property.

The councillor is scheduled to appear in the Hartbeesfontein Magistrate‚Äôs Court on Thursday, while the other 10 accused are expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
