The High Court in Pretoria has ruled that anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Timol was murdered and did not, as officially reported, commit suicide.
The Court overturned the findings of a 40-year inquest that endorsed the police's version of Timol's 1971 death.
Police at the time said that Timol had jumped from a 10th floor window in the John Vorster Square Police Station..
On Thursday, the High Court delivered a ruling overturning the official report, saying that the activist died after being tortured and was then pushed out of a window by members of the police's security branch.
The court further recommended that Jan Rodrigues, a former member of the security branch, be investigated for his role in covering up Timol's murder.
