Members of the South African Commercial‚ Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) working at Shoprite stores around the country are set to go on strike from Friday.
The union says that around 30 000 of its members will participate in marches and protests on Friday.
Workers have gone on strike demanding that working hours be revised and that safe transport be provided for those who work late.
“The demonstrations today are informed by the company enforcing new working hours for permanent employees,” Saccawu’s Mike Tau explained.
“We’re demanding that the company should provide safe and reliable transport to those who are working early and late shifts,” he added.
Shoprite has moved to assure customers that operations across the country will continue as usual in spite of the strike.
