One man has drowned, while an eight-year-old boy was hospitalised, after the dingy they were in capsized near the Umkomaas River Mouth on Sunday afternoon.
According to eyewitness accounts, the dingy was swept out to sea, which authorities believe led to it capsizing. The man was declared dead at the scene, despite extensive efforts to try and resuscitate him.
The advanced life support interventions were implemented for the greater part of 45 minutes, but no vital signs returned. The boy was rescued and taken to hospital for further treatment.
“Paramedics arrived on the scene after they were called by members of the community who apparently witnessed the dingy capsize. An 8-year-old boy was rescued by a man from the nearby boat and brought to the shore,” said ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring.
“Paramedics, lifeguards and members of the community began to search the waters for the missing man. After a short time, the man’s body was found a few metres away from the shore,” added Meiring.
“The man was assessed and found to have showed no signs of life. ER24 and Medivac paramedics immediately began CPR, and initiated advanced life support interventions, in an effort to revive the patient.”
