It was a dark entry into 2018 for two vehicle occupants travelling on the Dumisanya Makhanya Freeway in Pinetown, as they were killed in an horrific accident on Monday morning.
The accident happened just outside Claremont, at about 04:00 on New Year’s Morning. Authorities believe the vehicle lost control before coming to a standstill in a ditch on the roadside. There is still no clarity on whether alcohol was involved but there were seven occupants in the light motorvehicle.
“Paramedics assessed the scene and found that there had been seven occupants in the vehicle at the time of the collision,” said Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson on Monday.
“Unfortunately a male and a female believed to be in their thirties had suffered major injuries and there was nothing more anyone could do for them and they were declared deceased at the scene,” added Jamieson.
“A further five people had sustained various injuries and were stabilised on the scene before being transported to various Durban Hospitals for the further care that they required,” added Jamieson.
The accident is now the subject of a police investigation.
