Health Minister Arron Motsoaledi recently confirmed that the Listeriosis epidemic is “under control”.
Motsoaledi made the announcement during his Budget Vote in Parliament. The minister said that the epidemic was now under control after all meat products from Enterprise were recalled.
“Since the recall, we have had less than five cases a week in the past five weeks compared to 40 a week before the recall,” he said.
Listeriosis is caused by bacteria in soil, water, and vegetation.
Newborn babies, pregnant women, and the elderly are vulnerable to the illness.
Pregnant women are the highest risk group for contracting the illness.
The illness can cause miscarriages, a serious infection of the newborn and premature delivery.
