The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is confident it will announce the final results of South Africa’s fifth democratic elections at 18:00 on Saturday as the vote count reaches completion on Friday.

“Ladies and gentlemen, with 97.96 percent of results captured, we are confident of being able to announce the official results tomorrow,” said IEC chairperson Pansy Tlakula.

“We have received four objections submitted in terms of Section 55 of the Electoral Act and the Commission will deal with these before we announce the final results at 18h00 tomorrow here at the National Results Centre” she said.

The announcement is set to be broadcast live on SABC 2 and on the various news channels.

Tlakula said voter turnout was 73.26% and the commission is still waiting for delivery of ballots from eight foreign missions for inclusion in the count for the international voting district.

As of 14:30 on Friday, the African National Congress (ANC) are in the lead with 11 173 330 votes -62.21% nationally. The Democratic Alliance (DA) are in second place with 3 984 219 votes – 22.18%. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are in third place with 1 125 426 votes – 6.27%.
