Cape Town International voted best in Africa

Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) walked away with best airport in Africa at the 2017 Skytrax World Airport Awards on Wednesday.

The awards, which were held in Amsterdam on Wednesday, are among the most prestigious in the aviation industry and are significant in that votes are based on customer satisfaction and voted on by travellers. The 2017 awards were based on 13.82 million airport questionnaires answered by 105 different nationalities of airline customers.

In addition, CTIA also broke into the Top 20 of the Top 100 best airports in the world. It came in at no.19, climbing three spots higher than last year, from 22nd. The airport also experienced its highest volume in 2016, welcoming more than 10 million passengers.

Alan Winde, minister of economic opportunities in the Western Cape, congratulated the Airport, saying that the awards are the benchmark for excellence in the aviation industry.

Out of the South African airports making the list, OR Tambo International performed the worst, slipping seven spots from its 2016 rank to 37th. It’s performance was not not too shabby, however, as it ranked considerably higher than New York’s equally busy JFK Airport, which came in at 67th.

Durban’s King Shaka International Airport maintained its position at 35 out of the top 100 airports,  and also scored 6th best regional airport, as well as best regional airport in Africa. Japan’s Centrair Nagoya took top Regional Airport.

Domestic travel in South Africa looks to be in a good situation, with East London, Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein making the list for regional airports, coming in second, third and fourth respectively.
