Police making progress in OR Tambo heist

Police are making progress in their investigation into the brazen heist that occurred more than a week ago at the OR Tambo International Airport, with the arrest of seven suspects thus far.

Two men were arrested last week, with five more taken into custody recently.

According to information in Eyewitness News‘ possession, the latest crop of suspects arrested include security guards stationed at the airport during the heist. A substantial amount of money, as well as a luxurious sports car – a Lamborghini – are believed to have been seized as well.

One of the suspects arrested last week is believed to be a policeman.

The suspects in custody are believed to come from different areas, including Soshanguve and Kempton Park.

Police and the Hawks have declined to comment, but acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane has asked that the investigators be granted space to do their jobs.

“I’ve seen even some pictures even on social media. Can people just allow us to conduct an investigation and at a point where we’ve got something credible to come back to mention and report we’ll do so,” Phahlane said.

Phahlane said that it has emerged that those entrusted with securing the violated section failed in their duty, but he did not believe that this should bring the competency of the authorities responsible for securing the airport into question.
