Whatsapp saves teen’s life


A 16-year-old surfer used Whatsapp to notify his mother that he had fallen down an embankment in a popular surf area in Hermanus on Sunday.

The teen had intentions to surf and was checking out the waves when he fell down the 3m embankment in Bayview.

National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Jean le Roux said that they boy quickly sent his mom a text on Whatsapp, who then alerted NSRI.

“We dispatched our sea rescue craft Jaytee III, NSRI medics responded directly to the scene and EMR ambulance services responded,” le Roux said.

The teen suffered a cut to his right eye and injured his hip. He was then taken to hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
