DA suspends Joburg councillor

The Democratic Alliance announced that it had suspended one of its councillors in the City of Johannesburg.

Councillor Sharon Peetz, who served as a mayoral committee member for economic development was fired by Mayor Herman Mashaba last week for providing false information in an investigation.

Peetz faced investigation following allegations that she had lied about taking a relative on an official trip to Spain. Further investigation unearthed forensic evidence that Peetz had provided falsified proof of payment.

Mashaba referred the matter to the party for possible disciplinary action.

The party's federal executive has since suspended Peetz from party activities pending an investigation by the metro's ethics committee.

Peetz is expected to receive notice of her suspension on Thursday.
