A Bangladeshi man has been jailed for life by a court in eastern India for raping an elderly nun in March 2015.
Nazrul Islam was found guilty of rape and attempted murder by the court in Kolkata (Calcutta), India.
The rest of the men involved in the robbery in Ranaghat, in the West Bengal state, were also handed down sentences for their involvement. Five men were jailed for 10 years for robbery and one received seven years for protecting the perpetrators.
The 71-year-old nun was attacked when the men broke into the convent.
Judge Kumkum Singha, during sentencing on Wednesday said: “What happened to the elderly nun is a blot on West Bengal’s legacy where Mother Teresa worked for the poor”.
BBC World reports that the nun – whose identity has been protected for legal reasons – underwent surgery after the attack and has since moved out of West Bengal.
