SUV ploughs into pedestrians in Melbourne

An SUV has ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians crossing a busy intersection in Melbourne, Australia.

According to reports, a white Suzuki SUV drove into a crowd crossing the intersection. An eyewitness says that between 60 and 100 people were crossing the intersection when the SUV hit them. The vehicle was reportedly travelling at around 70km per hour and showed no intention of slowing down.

Around 15 people were injured in the incident.

Police confirmed that they arrested the driver of the vehicle as well as a second man.

Police, however, declined to call it a terror attack. They have neither implemented any counter-terrorism lock-down strategies nor activated the new terror warning sirens.

“Police have saturated the CBD area in the vicinity of Flinders, Elizabeth and Swanston streets to ensure community safety,” spokesperson for Victoria Police, Creina O’Grady said.

“A number of people are being treated at the scene for a range of injuries,” she added.

The incident occurred at the beginning of peak hour on Thursday morning.
