Bushiri’s controversial church closed in Botswana

Controversial Malawian pastor Shepherd Bushiri has had an application to open a branch of his church in Botswana turned down.

A notice by the Botswana government said that the registration application for a church linked to Bushiri’s Enlightened Christian Gathering Church International had been cancelled after it failed to respond to a letter where the government wanted reasons to justify its continued operations.

According to a Botswana newspaper, the Botswana government had concerns that the church was violating the law. The church reportedly requests “miracle money” from followers, which the government deems illegal.

The report added that other groups linked to the church had been ordered to cease operations with immediate effect.

Bushiri is a religious leader known for his preaching-style and reported miracle-working abilities.

He gained public attention about two years ago when he released a video on YouTube showing him walking on air.
