Malawi Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Joseph Mwanamvekha found himself in hot waters after he posted an image of a cheque payment to Whatsapp.
According to Malawi24, Mwanamvekha reportedly posted a picture of a cheque payment made to his personal company, Amazon Investment Limited, in a Whatsapp forum with Members of Parliament.
A payment of 18.2-million Malawian kwacha (around R30 000) was paid into Mwanamvekha’s private company account.
Mwanamvekha was believed to have intended to send the image to a driver but instead sent it to the wrong group.
Mwanamvekha sent out a statement explaining himself and apologized on the forum following the incident.
“As most of you are already aware, Amazon Investments Limited is a private company whose sole business is transportation and has been in business for almost 10 years. The company has been doing business with many private companies including Glens, Manica, Farmers World, ETG, Malawi Fertilizers Co and many others. It has been doing business with these companies way before I became the Minister. When I became the Minister, I made appropriate declarations as required,” he explained.
