Boipatong ‘church leader’ found with ATM explosives

The image of the church took another battering this week, when the 47-leader of a Boipatong congregation was found in the possession of explosives, normally used to carry ATM robberies.

The church leader and her son were arrested, following an intelligence driven operation conducted by the Welkom Public Order Policing Reaction team. The raid was conducted late on Monday night.

Both suspects are expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon. The arrests come in the wake of an operation in the Eastern Cape, where leaders of the Mancoba Angel Ministry Church were arrested for their role in the massacre of policemen at the Ngcobo Police Station earlier this year.

“During an operation an address in Boipatong location which is also used as a church
was visited,” said police spokesperson Colonel Thandi Mbambo.

“A search was conducted in the house and various explosives normally used to blow ATM’s were found and confiscated,” added Mbambo.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the explosives were allegedly destined to blow up ATM’s in Welkom,” added Mbambo.
