Oprah Winfrey’s meeting with Meghan Markle’s mother sent the rumour mill into a frenzy with the idea that the Queen of Talk would be interviewing the Duchess of Sussex’s mother.
Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland has always kept a relatively low-profile from the spotlight but her daughter’s recent wedding to Prince Williams had tabloids all over the social worker.
After images of Doria leaving Oprah’s home surfaced, reports that Oprah was trying to get an interview with Meghan’s mom emerged. The fact that Doria had spent about six hours with Oprah and left with gifts drove the rumour further.
Oprah’s attendance at the royal wedding also added fuel to the fire. The Queen of Talk in an interview has provided some clarity to the rumours.
Explaining what had actually happened to Entertainment Tonight, Oprah said “The story was that Meghan’s mom had come to my house and she left laden with gifts. You know what the gifts were? First of all, she’s great at yoga, so I said, ‘Bring your yoga mat and your sneaks in case we just want to do yoga on the lawn.’ So one of the bags was a yoga mat and the other was lunch.”
Oprah explained that she gave Doria a basket of kumquats after Doria let her know she loved them.
“She said, ‘I love kumquats,’ and I said, ‘I have a kumquat tree! You want some kumquats?’ So it was a basket of kumquats, people. For all of the people who said I am getting her gifts and I’m trying to bribe her for an interview—they were kumquats. If kumquats can get you an interview, I’m all for it!”
Oprah did not reveal if she had an interview with the Duchess’s mother or not but praised Meghan and Harry’s wedding.
“It was more than a wedding, I thought. It was a cultural moment. And you could not be there or watching on television . . . and not feel that there was a shift that just happened in the middle of it,” she said.
