The African National Congress (ANC) has congratulated ZANU-PF on its resounding victory in the Zimbabwe elections this week, adding that the results were an accurate reflection of the will of the people.
South Africa’s governing party also congratulated Emmerson Mnangagwa on winning the race to Zimbabwe’s top office.
The ANC said the Zimbabwe elections were a democratic process, adding that it was incumbent on all leaders and citizens to accept and embrace the outcome of these elections. The party was reacting to the violence that manifested itself in Zimbabwe once the election results started to filter through earlier this week.
“The loss of life and violent outbreaks in the streets is regrettable and we call on all citizens of Zimbabwe, including opposition parties, to accept this democratic outcome,” said national spokesperson Pule Mabe.
“The ANC also wishes to commend the voters and all people of Zimbabwe whose exemplary patriotism has helped to strengthen and promote a culture of democracy in Zimbabwe. Democracy and the people of Zimbabwe have emerged as undisputed winners,” added Mabe.s
“We urge the newly-elected leadership to pay focused attention on the socio-economic challenges that confront the people of Zimbabwe. Now is the time to unite the nation and to devote its collective energy towards reconstruction and development. The ANC stands ready to walk this path with the people of Zimbabwe and to lend a hand.”
