Africa’s youngest billionaire kidnapped by gunmen in Tanzania


On Thursday, Africa’s youngest billionaire was kidnapped in Tanzania’s economic capital, Dar es Salaam by gunmen.

Chief Executive Officer of MeTL group Mohammed Dewji was kidnapped as he entered a hotel gym in the city.

Speaking to journalists, regional governor Paul Makonda said “Initial information indicates he was kidnapped by whites travelling in two vehicles,” and said the incident “is new here”.

Dar es Salaam police chief Lazaro Mambosasa at a press conferenced said the alleged kidnappers “shot into the air” before throwing the billionaire into their vehicle.

According to police, arrests have been made and police are searching for suspects.

MeTL Group is Tanzania’s largest home-grown company and is worth more than $1.5 billion and operates in almost 10 countries. The group has businesses interests in agriculture, insurance, transport and logistics across several countries

Dewji was born in Tanzania. He studied in the United States.
