Chinese intelligence officer extradited to US

A suspected Chinese intelligence officer has been charged with economic espionage by the United States justice department.

Officials stated that Yanjun Xu attempted to steal trade secrets from US aviation and aerospace companies, reportedly on behalf of China.

Xu was arrested in Belgium in April 2018. He was extradited to the US earlier this week.

Beijing has dismissed the accusations.

“We cannot tolerate a nation’s stealing our firepower and the fruits of our brainpower,” said assistant attorney general for National Security John Demers.

Prosecutors said Xu is a senior officer with China’s ministry of state security. The ministry is responsible for counter-intelligence, foreign intelligence and political security.

The indictment remained unsealed this week, after the suspect’s extradition.
