A 43-year-old Mr D Food delivery man accused of allegedly trying to rape a customer made his first court appearance on Wednesday.

Cassiem Imani appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court after being arrested for allegedly attacking the woman inside her Wynberg home on Monday.

According to reports, the woman let the driver in and locked the security gate as she went inside to fetch the cash for her order, the Daily Voice reported.

He allegedly followed her and asked her if she lived alone. The victim told the suspect that she lived with her father. He then pushed her to the floor and penetrated her vagina. He then kicked down the security gate, which the woman locked, and ran away.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Liesel Beukes said that a case of rape was under investigation but revealed that Imani was now facing attempted rape charges.

The Daily Voice reported that it was heard in court that Imani attacked the woman and tried to rape her but did not succeed.

Magistrate Goolam Bawa questioned why the docket stated rape and not attempted rape. The charge was then changed.

The case has been postponed to July 17.
