A report revealed that nearly 900 people have been arrested in Johannesburg for driving under the influence in July.
The Sowetan reports that the numbers came from the latest crime statistics released from Johannesburg police chief David Tembe on Monday. Braamfontein, Yeoville and the inner city accounted for 140 of the arrests, while 139 persons were arrested in Soweto.
Aside from drinking and driving offences, 28 were arrested in connection with stolen vehicles and 24 for unlicensed firearms.
Meanwhile in Cape Town, police officers arrested 39 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol last week.
