Police have arrested two suspects in connection with an attempted robbery at a shopping centre in Gauteng.

The incident occurred at the Sky City Mall in Kliprivier. A quick-thinking mall employee managed to trap the two armed robbers in a safe.

Police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said that the two arrested suspects were part of a gang who managed to escape in a getaway vehicle.

The two suspects, trapped in the safe, were arrested with the cash, Dlamini said. A firearm used to shoot at the safe door was also recovered.

“Members of the K9 Unit, Flying Squad and local police officers had surrounded the complex when they heard that the suspects were trapped inside the safe,” Dlamini said.

Officers then entered the premises and arrested the suspects. They face charges of including attempted murder, business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects who fled the scene.
