Metrorail has reportedly cancelled 27 trains due to vandalism in Cape Town on Tuesday morning.

The decision was made following criminal activity on Sunday and Monday.

On Sunday, criminals attempted to steal cables in Salt River. This triggered a high voltage surge which then damaged an equipment room.

Criminals then stole cables in Kentemade and Ysterplaat, as well as Hazendal and Langa on Monday.

The Simons Town and Cape Flats line have been highly affected by the vandalism.

According to Metrorail's Richard Walker, the vandalism affected all lines coming into Cape Town.

"We also had two other cases of vandalism to make things worse," he said.
