The case of missing student Uyinene Mrwetyana came to an end on Monday when the suspect arrested confessed to raping and murdering her.

The 42-year-old man was an employee at the Clareinch Post Office where Mrwetyana - a University of Cape Town student - was last seen over a week ago.

No less than three private investigators joined police and Mrwetyana’' friends in the search for the first-year media student.

The Wynberg Magistrates court heard on Monday that the suspect hit the 19-year-old over the head with a scale inside the Post Office. While Mrwetyana fought back, she was eventually knocked unconscious.

A body was found in Khayelitsha and police are still to undergo an autopsy and DNA testing to confirm it is Mrwetyana's remains.
