Two people have been killed and 30 others have been arrested after violence erupted in Samora Machel in Cape Town during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed that two people were killed.
The bodies of a 32-year-old woman and an unidentified man were found on the premises of a shop that had been looted.
Thirty people were arrested after shops were looted and torched.
“The police intervention saw a total of 25 people arrested for looting a local store. Several smaller shops were also targeted by community members," Traut said.
"An additional five people were arrested for being in possession of stolen groceries."
According to reports, police allegedly raided illegal shebeens in the area and this reportedly angered some of the residents.
Traut said that "Operation Lockdown" had been stabilised in the area. Police officers remain on high alert.
