National Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole revealed the dire shortage of personnel in the sector.

The Citizen reports that last month, Sitole was to cut his budget by no less than R6 billion by the Treasury. When police minister Bheki Cele was addressing Parliament on the crime statistics on Wednesday, the diminishing budget raised some concern among MP's.

Sithole revealed that there was a shortage of 62 000 police officers for visible policing and another 8500 short for investigations. Meanwhile, the Hawks - the crime fighting unit - revealed they are 2800 investigators short.

"With this shortage, they can never be an elite investigative unit," said Sithole.

Meanwhile, Cele revealed that the budget cut will obviously have a negative impact on performance of the already overwhelmed police service.

"Any form of cut of budget will affect the performance of the police," he said.
